Sculpture for Modern Interior Decoration

When we talk about art in a home, we usually imagine the typical shapeless painting with neutral colors and two or three reliefs, if the designers had a little more imagination. It takes considerable composure and a very clear design vision to dare to shift themes and introduce exotic pieces into a home or office that’s frequently used throughout the day, where warmth and comfort are so important. At SEME Studio, we dare to go big because our mentor and leader, Edgar Orozco, instills in us the confidence to explore and delve deeply into our creativity.

Sculpture has been our main focus of interest since day one because it showcases the exaggerated, the pronounced, the almost 4D closeness that touching it is nearly impossible, although, of course, we strongly advise against it, as it could end badly, haha.

Hyperrealism represents something even deeper and more fragile within art. While it doesn’t often merge with sculpture, when it does, it undoubtedly becomes a historic piece. The experience for the human eye is almost sensory.

Hyperrealism focuses on the graphic representation of the object or person; extreme detail is implemented in every carving, every fold. Clearly, the goal is to create a work that conveys something almost exactly identical to real life. Every texture, every shadow, every element is carefully crafted to achieve high levels of precision.

If you know Edgar, his deep obsession with human anatomy and medicine is no secret; one only needs to look at his work from his life as a dentist to appreciate his perfection. In his sculptures, he is even more precise in the details so that the viewer can grasp his message.

Textured wall sculpured. Herons and trees around a lake.

The sculpture has a lot of background from its beginnings, being a lover of Greek mythology and history in general, the artist invites us to a very real unique form of perception of what it means to be a hyperrealist sculptor.

Sculpture became so ingrained in the artist because it works in a more physical way. Instead of being limited to colors and flat images, sculptures exist in space, allowing for different interactions with elements such as lighting, movement, and the point of perception. Sculpture can add dimension and structure to any space in a surprisingly subtle way that no painting or flat art can achieve. The more we immerse ourselves in this wonderful world of interior design and art, the more people seek us out for our modern and unique pieces. Depending on the intended purpose of the space, we always like to maintain a close relationship with the client, allowing them to share their vision for the project.

In this particular piece, shown below, we met with an admirable doctor who sought to convey the elegance and nobility of his practice, the tranquility of his dental office where, from the first moment, the patient feels welcomed and alleviates any anxiety that might arise from simply visiting the dentist. We focused entirely on the color white to convey this and unify it with the white we all seek in healthy teeth. Within the design, the sense of calm comes not only from the animals, herons, and the space they inhabit, but also from the doctor’s own personality, which is strongly projected in the sculpture.

The artwork invites patients to approach and contemplate it, and to interact with it; it is a meditative process where for a moment they forget the nerves they arrived with to continue with their medical procedures, while they change the subject and focus of attention a little.

Thirty years of training in sculpture, combined with a career in dentistry and nearly a decade at SEME Studio, have shaped this upcoming art project, which is being prepared with great enthusiasm for one of Mexico’s most emblematic dental clinics.

The fusion of art, design, and science merges to address a theme that has occupied the human mind since time immemorial, and which will remain relevant as long as humankind possesses a mind… Day after day, motor in hand, this artist has honed his craft, carving forms on sculptures, dental pieces, and furniture; and now, these serve as tools to be used as a language.

Owner notes:

Edgar alongside the entire SEME team have made me feel things I never thought I could feel, just by deciding to decorate an important space to me. It has been an incredible experience.

Now, every time a patient arrives at the office, a profound and real change in their dental experience is noticeable.
